Aging & Longevity Part 2: The Best Ingredients, Routines, and Treatments for Healthy Aging Skin

By Melissa Pelletier, Licensed Esthetician | MP Skin Therapy at Wish Electrolysis and Laser Center, Fitchburg, MA

Aging is a natural part of life — but how our skin ages is influenced by both genetics and the choices we make every day. In Part 1, we talked about why skin changes over time and the internal and external factors that contribute to aging.

Now let’s talk about what we can actually do to support healthy, resilient skin as we age.

The goal of longevity-focused skincare isn’t to “stop aging.” It’s to help skin function at its best for as long as possible by protecting collagen and elastin, supporting the skin barrier, reducing inflammation, encouraging healthy cellular function and of course, protecting our skin from environmental stress from UV exposure, pollution.

The Most Effective Ingredients for Aging Skin

There are thousands of skincare ingredients on the market, but a few truly stand out when it comes to supporting aging skin. I personally use products from Circadia and PCA Skin and Glymed + to support my skin and for age management. I reach for Hale and Hush for additional barrier support during the change of seasons and when my skin needs some extra care and comfort. I also utilize these products in my treatment room and can help you with a skincare routine that will meet your skin’s needs and your budget.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the most researched antioxidant ingredients in skincare. It helps protect the skin from environmental damage caused by UV exposure and pollution while also supporting collagen production and helping brighten uneven skin tone. I recommend Vitamin C for everyone, it is appropriate for all skin types and ages.

Best for:

  • Dullness

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Fine lines

  • Antioxidant/Environmental protection

Retinoids (Vitamin A)

Retinoids help speed up cell turnover and stimulate collagen production. They are considered one of the gold-standard ingredients for aging skin because they help improve texture, fine lines, pigmentation, and firmness over time.

Best for:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Acne + aging concerns

  • Uneven texture

  • Collagen support

Peptides

Peptides are small proteins that help support skin repair and collagen production. Think of them as “messengers” that encourage the skin to function more efficiently. There are several peptides that can improve the longevity of our skin that influence cell behavior, inhibit muscle contraction to help relax the appearance of expression lines by reducing the repeated facial movements that contribute to wrinkles over time.

Best for:

  • Loss of firmness

  • Barrier support

  • Early signs of aging

  • Sensitive aging skin

Growth Factors & Stem Cell Technology

These advanced ingredients help support skin repair, healing, and rejuvenation by encouraging healthier cellular communication and regeneration.

Best for:

  • Mature skin

  • Post-procedure healing

  • Advanced signs of aging

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid helps attract and hold water in the skin, improving hydration and helping skin appear plumper and smoother.

Best for:

  • Dehydration

  • Fine lines caused by dryness

  • Barrier support

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a multitasking ingredient that helps strengthen the skin barrier, reduce inflammation, improve uneven tone, and support healthier aging overall.

Best for:

  • Sensitivity

  • Redness

  • Pigmentation

  • Barrier repair

SPF

If there is one product that makes the biggest difference long-term, it’s sunscreen. Daily SPF helps protect collagen, prevent pigmentation, and reduce premature aging caused by UV exposure.

Best for:
Everyone. Every day. Non-negotiable.

Building a Routine Based on Your Skin Stage

Your skin’s needs change over time. A longevity-focused routine should evolve with you.

In Your 20s: Prevention & Protection

This is the time to focus on protecting the skin and building healthy habits. Here are some recommendations with some of my favorite products.

Focus on:

Professional treatments may include:

  • Customized facials

  • Acne management

  • Preventative treatments

In Your 30s: Early Correction & Collagen Support

Collagen production begins to slow, and early signs of aging may become more noticeable.

Focus on:

Professional treatments may include:

  • Corrective facials

  • Chemical peels

  • Microneedling to bank your collagen and get ahead of eventual collagen loss

  • LED therapy

  • Early collagen-stimulating treatments

In Your 40s: Correction + Skin Function Support

Skin often becomes thinner, drier, and less resilient during this decade due to hormonal and collagen changes. This is when you can really focus on protecting your collagen and elastin with more advanced treatments and focus on fading existing pigment and preventing future pigment formation.

In Your 50s and Beyond: Strengthening & Maintenance

The goal becomes maintaining skin integrity, hydration, and overall function while continuing to support collagen and reduce inflammation. I can recommend products from both Circadia and PCA Skin depending on your needs and budget.

When Should You Start Advanced Treatments?

One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that you should wait until aging becomes severe before seeking professional treatments. In reality, preventative and supportive treatments often provide the best long-term results.

Advanced treatments are not just about correcting damage — they’re about maintaining healthier skin function over time.

You may benefit from more advanced treatments if you notice:

  • Loss of firmness

  • Fine lines becoming more noticeable

  • Persistent pigmentation

  • Acne scarring

  • Texture changes

  • Increased dryness or sensitivity

  • Slower healing and recovery

The best treatment plan is always individualized based on your skin type, concerns, goals, and lifestyle.

Aging Gracefully Starts with Skin Health

Healthy aging is not about chasing perfection or looking 20 forever. It’s about supporting your skin through every stage of life with consistency, prevention, and treatments that work with your skin — not against it.

By protecting collagen, reducing inflammation, supporting the skin barrier, and choosing the right ingredients and treatments, we can help skin stay stronger, healthier, and more resilient for years to come.
